House in the woods
House Coccinelle is a private house on the island of Walcheren. It is located in the middle of a beautiful forest, which borders the sea. The house consists of four dissimilar volumes; two of which are renovated ‘shacks’, the others are newly built. Together they produce a fragmented and low-lying ensemble, with an open courtyard as its nucleus.
The ‘sleeping building’ contains two stories and is half sunken into the ground. Situated on the treeline, the bedrooms look straight into the forest. The ‘social building’ is located at ground level and houses the kitchen, dining room, fireplace and a games room. A series of strategically placed view lines and windows produce a rhythm of connective instances between inside and outside. A colonnade links the two buildings and defines the courtyard. The former sheds are transformed into a sauna and bedroom. With its fragmented and low lying configuration the house aims to be submissive to its extraordinary surroundings.
